How does acupuncture help?
Acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. More traditionally, Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that is based on the idea that a blockage or imbalance in the flow of the body’s life energy, or Qi, can cause health issues. Acupuncturists insert thin needles into specific points throughout the body to balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation.
What conditions can acupuncture help with?
In TCM, we view the body, mind, and spirit as whole and treat health conditions from the root cause based on our diagnosis.
TCM acupuncture and cupping can help with many different areas of health, including:
- Digestion (IBS, constipation, bloating)
- Hormone health (infertility, PCOS, PMS, menopause, thyroid)
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Insomnia
- Pain relief
- Headaches & migraines
- Immune & respiratory support
- Premature aging prevention
- Nervous system & stress support
- Skin health (wrinkles, acne, eczema)
- Mood (depression, anxiety)
How many treatments do I need and what does it involve?
Once you have had your initial assessment, I can recommend a specific treatment plan for you. Typically, to see significant changes to improve your health, you need between 4-8 treatments. Your treatment plan can include acupuncture, moxa, cupping, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle strategies to support your health.
Initial appointments are 60 minutes, follow up treatments are 45 minutes. Ideally, at the beginning of your treatment plan you can come in more frequently (1-2x/week) and subsequent treatments are usually booked 1x/week.
How should I expect to feel during and after my treatment?
Acupuncture is a great experience. The needles can produce a slight discomfort in some areas but a skilled practitioner will make sure to use proper technique with minimal discomfort while inserting the needles. Cupping will leave marks on your skin temporarily, which is normal, and they will dissipate within a couple of days. You should eat something prior to your appointment and ensure you go to the washroom before your treatment.
After your treatment you will feel relaxed and can go on with your day as normal. Try not to do anything too strenuous on the day of your treatment.
