Today I want to share one of my favourite energy recipes with you. While coffee may have it’s perks, it can also cause many of us to feel overly anxious, cause blood sugar dysregulation, interrupt sleep, overstimulate the nervous system, and interfere with nutrient absorption. I wrote an article about coffee that you can read about here.

This is why I often help my clients find alternatives to coffee for at least a month when they are wanting to regain their energy, enjoy better mood,  and support healthy adrenal function.

I have talked about the health benefits of matcha in detail before (here), which include calming amino acid l-theanine to counteract the caffeine to give you better focus and support healthy aging due to it’s high antioxidant values. So today I will focus on the benefits of an adaptogenic root called maca!

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are herbs and plants used to help the body adapt to stressors of all kinds ~ physical, chemical, and biological. Each type of adaptogen has its own unique properties and benefits to support homeostasis. Most commonly, adaptogens are utilized to enhance immune, hormonal, & cognitive health.

You’ll want to start slow and take adaptogens for at least 2-6 weeks to see full benefit. After 6 weeks, it’s recommended to take a break for 1-2 weeks before resuming.

Generally adaptogens are safe to take, but some people who suffer from autoimmunity or are currently pregnant or breastfeeding may not want to start with adaptogens without first speaking to a healthcare provider.

What is Maca?

It is a Peruvian superfood root that has been cultivated as a vegetable crop for at least 3000 years. It’s primarily been used to support healthy fertility, stamina, and for increased energy. In foods, maca is eaten baked or roasted, prepared as a soup, and used for making a fermented drink called maca chicha.

Top benefits of Maca:

  • nourishes healthy hormonal function
  • enhances sexual desire + fertility
  • lifts mood + reduces anxiety
  • improves overall energy + endurance
