A member of the Brassica family, brussels sprouts resemble tiny cabbages. So sweet. In season from September until March, these are perfect to kick off some healthy habits for fall! They can be eaten as an appetizer, side dish or added to main meals, such as a stir-fry.

Crucefirous vegetables, like brussels sprouts, are the ‘it’ superfoods when it comes to healthy hormones as they help to remove harmful xeno-estrogens from the body. Xeno-estrogens make their way into our body from plastics food containers, commercially-raised meat and diary products such as beef, pork, chicken, milk, butter, cheese and ice cream, as well as anything that contains insecticide or pesticide residues.

Brussels sprouts aid in the phase 2 detoxification process, since they contain compounds called glucosinolates. These compounds contain sulfur, which the body needs in high amounts to activate its own detoxification system. Compounds created from glucosinolates also help to stimulate enzyme systems in the body, which detox cancer-causing toxins.

Try to eat Brussel sprouts with a source of healthy fats as they contain the fat-soluble bone-loving vitamin K!
