acupuncture for pain relief

The modern pain pattern: “tight, tired, and inflamed”

A lot of women I meet aren’t doing anything “wrong.” They’re working hard, driving kids, sitting at a desk, answering texts late, and trying to squeeze in movement when they can.

.

But the modern busy schedule can result in:

  • neck/shoulder tension that never fully releases

  • headaches or migraines that flare with stress

  • jaw clenching or TMJ symptoms

  • low back pain or sciatica-type ache

  • feeling stiff in the morning and sore by the afternoon.

.

Root causes you may not have thought of yet..

1) Stress physiology can become muscle physiology
If your nervous system is on high alert, your body holds tension as protection-especially in shoulders, jaw, and hips.

2) Micro-strain adds up
Tiny posture habits repeated all day matter more than one “bad” workout.

3) Inflammation isn’t just food – it’s your lifestyle
Sleep debt, stress, blood sugar swings, and dehydration can all increase pain sensitivity.

What the research says about acupuncture for chronic low back pain

High-quality reviews generally find acupuncture can help chronic low back pain compared with no treatment/usual care, often with modest improvements in pain/function.

A randomized clinical trial in JAMA Network Open (2025) also found acupuncture needling improved low-back-pain–related dysfunction in older adults compared with usual medical care alone.

(Translation: it’s not magic, but it can be a meaningful part of a plan, especially when paired with movement and recovery habits.)

.

How Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) looks at chronic pain:

In TCM, chronic pain is often discussed in terms of stagnation (things not moving well) and deficiency (the system doesn’t have enough resources to heal).

Common patterns I assess:

  • Qi & Blood stagnation (sharp/fixed pain, old injuries, tension patterns)

  • Liver Qi stagnation (stress pain, headaches, neck/shoulder tightness)

  • Damp/cold patterns (heavy ache, worse with cold or damp weather, stiffness)

  • Spleen/Kidney deficiency (chronic low back and/or knee weakness, fatigue)

.

Acupuncture treatments are tailored: points chosen for your pattern, plus local and distal points to reduce guarding and support mobility.

.

Nutrition to support pain recovery (simple + realistic)

1) Stabilize blood sugar
When blood sugar is chaotic, pain sensitivity often increases. Prioritize protein + fibre at meals.

2) Hydration + minerals
Even mild dehydration can increase headache frequency in some people. Add electrolytes via food: soups, mineral-rich greens, legumes, and seeds.

3) Anti-inflammatory basics
Aim for: fatty fish (or algae omega-3 for non-fish eaters), olive oil, berries, leafy greens, spices like turmeric/ginger, and less ultra-processed food.

4) Magnesium-rich foods
Pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, spinach, especially helpful when stress and muscle tension are major themes.

.

What a practical treatment plan can look like for you:

  • A short series of acupuncture treatments (often weekly) to calm the pain pattern, along with other tools of TCM like cupping, guasha, electrostimulator, etc.

  • Then spacing out as your body holds changes

  • Simple mobility + strengthening (2–3x/week) so the improvements stick

  • Nutrition and supplementation targets that are repeatable, not restrictive

How to get started:

If you’re tired of managing pain, depending on pain meds, and want to get back to living with ease, book online using the buttons below for either Semiahmoo Wellness Centre (South Surrey) or Fine Point Acupuncture (Delta/Surrey area).

Educational only; not medical advice. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pain, weakness/numbness, or changes in bowel/bladder function.

I first made an appointment at Fine Point acupuncture and wellness for sciatic nerve pain. Dr’s kept prescribing cover up pain meds, not actually fixing the problem and I got to the point where I needed to try other options of pain control. Annalissa was an angel sent from heaven! After a few treatments, pain was gone and I was able to continue my life! I highly recommend her! My job can be very high stress at times and she has helped me with a variety of concerns and issues (stress, sleep, focus, anxiety, headaches, back pain, foot pain and a BIG help when I had Bells Palsy.) She’s extremely knowledgeable, gentle, listens to you, very caring about your needs and great at making me feel comfortable during my appointments. I enjoy the conversations we have and the advice she gives me on other types of procedures I can try! Everyone I’ve met at Fine point have been very friendly as well. I’ve been going here for over a year now and don’t plan on stopping. I recommend this place 100%
